Hiking Maine's Katahdin and Bigelow Mountains: An Adventure Through the 100 Mile Wilderness (2026)

Katahdin Through the Bigelows: A Hiker's Tale

I stepped off the plane in Bangor, eager to embark on my Appalachian Trail adventure. The journey began with a bus ride to Medway and a shuttle to Millinocket, where I checked into my first hostel. The atmosphere was electric as I met fellow hikers, including a northbound AT hiker named Buckle, who shared valuable insights about a 'cult' hostel further south. Despite the rumors, the free breakfast at this hostel was a welcome treat.

Millinocket, a quaint town with a memorable main street, served as my base for the initial supply run. I meticulously planned my food for the upcoming 100-mile wilderness, only to discover my dislike for granola and trail mix. The excitement grew as I prepared for the ultimate challenge - Katahdin.

The shuttle ride to the base of Katahdin was a thrilling experience, with the mountain's grandeur leaving me in awe. I joined forces with three other hikers, Caleb, Noah, and Brayden, as we embarked on the southbound journey. The climb to the treeline was demanding, but the rock scramble offered a refreshing change of pace. As we reached the summit, the sun's rays bathed us in warmth, revealing a breathtaking vista.

The 100-mile wilderness, contrary to its name, was never truly remote. I encountered numerous large backpacking groups and northbound hikers, easily identifiable by their small backpacks, running shorts, and vibrant attire. I formed a rotating group with Ray, Eddie, and the lively trio of Donut, UPS, and Just Ben. Together, we navigated the rugged terrain, enduring blistering heat and ankle-destroying paths.

The stretch from Katahdin to Monson was a test of endurance. The roots and rocks formed a treacherous path, with thick roots swallowing feet and rocks shifting under each step. Despite the challenges, the group's strong morale kept spirits high. I arrived at Monson, a picturesque town, where I indulged in a long shower and washed my clothes, bidding farewell to the foul fatty sweat of the trail.

The journey from Monson to Carrabasset Valley, approximately 80 miles, was a challenging yet rewarding experience. I joined Donut, UPS, and Just Ben, forming a friendly and cohesive group. The landscape, similar to the 100-mile wilderness, offered smaller mountain peaks, with Moxie Bald standing out for its beauty. The Bigelows, however, were the highlight, with steep stairs and thin corridors leading to breathtaking vistas.

Staying at the Sterling Inn, I reconnected with Eddie and shared a hearty dinner with fellow hikers. The next day, my ankles still burning, I embarked on the final ascent. The Bigelows, with their rough terrain and strong winds, tested my endurance. Summiting the mountains, I hiked towards Horn Ponds Lean-to, where I encountered lean-to mice, friendly yet disruptive creatures.

The journey concluded with a shuttle ride to the next hostel in Carrabasset Valley. As I reflected on the adventure, I realized the importance of embracing the challenges and forging connections with fellow hikers. The Appalachian Trail, with its cult-like allure and breathtaking landscapes, left an indelible mark on my spirit, urging me to explore more of the great outdoors.
